The Warriors of Nanih Waiya High School took advantage of their first-round bye by getting in a couple games to prepare themselves for the MHSAA Class 1A State Baseball Playoffs.
As of press time on Tuesday, Nanih Waiya was set to open the playoffs on Thursday at home against Sacred Heart, which defeated Sebastopol in the first round last week. The Friday game was set to be at Sacred Heart with an “if necessary” game scheduled for Saturday in Nanih Waiya. All of those playoff dates are pending weather considerations.
Last week the Warriors dropped a 6-0 decision to Lake on Friday before beating Leake Central 10-3 on Saturday.
Nanih Waiya ran into some strong pitching against Lake in the form of left-hander Matthew Mitchell. “We got some good at bats against him,” Rogers said. “We would get a guy or two on base, but then couldn’t get the big hit.”
Ben Cumberland and Garrett Miles led Nanih Waiya at the plate in that game with a double each.
Miles picked up the win on the mound against Leake Central, while Wyatt Ball had two singles and a double. Roper Ball had three singles for the winners, while Stewart Ball and Peyton Jones had two hits each.
