Relay kicks off into full gear

From staff and press reports

Organizers of the 2013 Winston County Relay for Life are rounding up support for a holiday-themed event that they hope will continue the mission of helping provide vital programs and education to cancer patients and their families.

The 2013 Relay for Life kicked off on Nov. 15 at the Winston Medical Center cafeteria.

Committee members and representatives from several teams were welcomed by Relay for Life Chair Brandi Krajewski.

Krajewski noted that the kickoff was a great success.

“I felt the meeting was a success we had two new church teams present and two new school teams present,” said Krajewski.

The event has received 10 team commitments and hopes to build quickly from there. About 20 teams participated in 2012.

Krajewski said the theme for the 2013 event is: “Cancer Doesn’t Take A Holiday”. The theme aims to focus the event’s mission with the idea that the fight against cancer never stops. Teams will decorate their campsites in a holiday theme.

The goal of the Winston County Relay in addition to raising awareness is to raise $45,000.

“I feel that Winston Medical Center coming to the kick off with over $1000 already raised spoke volumes,” said Krajewski. “Fair Elementary team also has several upcoming events. So, I am proud to know that the teams are already in the works of raising money.”

The American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event for Winston County will be held Friday, May 31 at Louisville High School. The opening ceremony will be begin at 6 p.m., with cancer survivors taking their victory lap at 7 p.m.

During the kickoff, those attending were encouraged to find community members who would form a team to participate in the 2013 event or become a sponsor.

Churches, corporations and civic organizations are among those invited to create teams. Teams can register online at www.relayforlife.org/winstoncounty.

During the Relay for Life event, a luminary service will be held to remember those who have died of cancer and to honor cancer survivors. Luminaries are $10 each and will be set out along the Relay track.
