It would have been hard for Winston Academy head baseball coach Cory
Burns to have envisioned a better start to his team’s district
schedule. The Patriots took care of business with ease last Thursday,
sweeping Immanuel Christian in a doubleheader 10-0 and 15-0.
“We are really playing pretty well,” Burns said of his Patriots, who
are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. “We didn’t make an error in
the doubleheader and our bats really started working. Going into the
season we felt like if we could throw strikes and make the routine
plays on defense that our bats could carry us.”
Winston Academy plays in the Winona Christian School Tournament this
week, facing the host Stars — the top-ranked team in MAIS A — at 4:45
p.m. on Thursday and then playing two games on Friday. WA faces
Ruleville Central at 1:15 p.m. and Central Holmes at 4:45 p.m.
Taylor Moody picked up the win on the mound for Winston in the 10-0
five-inning win over Immanuel last Thursday, striking out 10 batters
and giving up just two walks in four and one-third innings of work.
Brody Burchfield, Channing Wall and D.K. Boydstun had two singles
each for the Pats in the game, while Moody and Carter Lane Jones
picked up a single each.
Channing Wall and Peyton Allen combined to mow down the Immanuel
batters in the second game. Wall struck out nine and gave up just one
hit and one walk in four innings of work, while Allen recorded three
strikeouts in his one inning of work.
Channing Wall belted two doubles and a single for Winston, while
Braxton Wall cranked out a triple and a double and Kenny Wright added
a single and a double. Burchfield ripped a two-bagger for the
winners, with Moody, Boydstun, Logan Webb, Matthew Talbot and Payson
Roberts each getting a single.
