There is a first time for everything, and in the case of Louisville
track athlete Shan Thames it’s all good.
This season is the first time Thames has competed in individual
events for the Lady Wildcats and it has certainly been a successful
one. Last Saturday she posted a time of 12.51 to win the 100 meters
in the MHSAA Class 4A North State Track Meet held in Pontotoc and
took second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.96.
All individuals and relay teams that finished in the top four in
their events in North State qualified to advance to the MHSAA Class
4A State Track Meet being held this Saturday at Pearl High School.
Joining Thames at the state meet will be Tyrekius Carter in the boys
triple jump and two boys and two girls relay teams.
Carter, who finished fifth in last year’s state meet, took third in
last week’s North State event with a distance of 42 feet and three
inches.
The boys 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams both finished third in North
State and are made up of athletes running together for the first time
this year.
The girls 4×200 team finished second in North State, while the 4×100
relay squad took third. Junior Marquesha Davis is the only member of
the girls relay teams who has competed at state.
Pontotoc took the overall title at North State with 121 points while
Corinth was second with 119. Louisville tied with Kosciusko for fifth
in the 20-team field with 40 points.
New Albany picked up 82 points to nip Rosa Fort by two points to win
the boys North State tittle. Louisville and Indianola Gentry tied for
ninth out of 20 teams with 27 points.
