A week after winning the first girls state championship in school history, the Nanih Waiya fast-pitch softball team has begun working on a repeat of their 2013 MSHAA Class 1A State Championship.

Several key members of the 2013 state title team are returning, while three seniors — Bridget Hunt, Megan Robinson and Kara Lane Nowell — were lost to graduation.

Nowell, who played catcher on the team, led the team with a whopping .446 batting average her senior year, with an on base percentage of .516. She also ripped seven doubles and drove in 21 runs.

Robinson played in 33 games, hitting .295 for the 25-7-1 Lady Warriors, with 25 runs scored and 28 RBIs to go with five doubles and three triples. She posted a .398 on base percentage. Hunt hit .231 in 17 games played and popped a pair of doubles and a triple and had an OBP of .400.

The Lady Warriors had a marvelous run through the postseason, winning eight of the nine games they played in the playoffs, including a 15-6 and 13-7 sweep of West Union the the state championship series played at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland earlier this month.

The Lady Warriors had six hitters finish the year with a batting average of .330 or better. Following Nowell’s team-leading mark was Ryan Holdiness at .407, Reagan Holdiness at .396, Mackenzie Johnson at .368, Brantlie Sheets at .345 and Marlee Parkes at .330.
