Salexxius Mays celebrates life free of cancer

It was a beautiful day at Dean Park, Hwy 15 South, Louisville, MS, Sunday, June 2, 2013, 3 p.m. with the pavilion decorated lime green and white with flowers and balloons all around in the same colors. A crowd gathered to celebrate the life of Salexxius Mays who is in remission after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer on October 1, 2010 at 9 years old. This writer remembers that sad day at the Boys and Girls Club of Winston County when her diagnosis was announced to the staff, boys and girls. Salexxius was a favorite there because of her good behavior, positive attitude and friendliness. Since Salexxius is now in remission, her mother Santita Haynes-Ezell decided it was time to celebrate her life and to thank the community for their prayers and the love shown toward the family. Rev. Willie V. Daniels of Starkville, pastor of Mt. Pleasant #1 of Louisville, opened the celebration with a prayer.

Salexxius entered the pavilion with her girlfriends following her in a double line to the gospel song by Marvin Sapp: Never Would have made it without You. There were many tears shed throughout the crowd as this healthy looking beautiful young girl entered with her mother and brother, Tonyo crying also. Some of the lyrics:

Never would have made it

Never could have made it without You

I would have lost it all

But now I see how You were there for me

I’m stronger, I’m wiser

I’m better, much better

When I look back

Over all You brought me through

I can see that You were the One

I held on to.

The tears soon left and the crowd enjoyed food prepared by her step-father George Ezell, family and friends. The boys and girls enjoyed the carnival toys donated by the Honorable Mayor Will Hill, and the crowd danced to the music played by DJ ‘Reddmann Tha Grand Champ’. Mrs. Ezell said, “I would like to thank everyone for coming out to support the special day with my daughter. A special thanks to the Friends of Dean Park, Inc. and the Dean Park Commission for co-sponsoring the event with us. We will be journeying to Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, MS to present the donation from the funds raised on Friday, June 14, 2013”.
