NAACP to host Back to School Rally

From press reports

On Saturday, July 20, 2013, the Winston County Branch of the NAACP will hold its annual Back-to-School Rally at Dean Park in the Center Ridge Community from 5 to 7 p.m.

Every summer for the past seven years students and families of Winston County have had a chance to get “pumped-up” for school at the NAACP Back-to-School Rally. The NAACP Back-to-School Rally is an event meant to encourage both students and parents to realize the fundamental value of a quality education.

The program will include an inspiring presentation and entertainment. The motivational speaker will be Dr. Melissa Davis. Dr. Davis is a 21 year resident of Louisville. She recently earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) in Elementary, Middle and Secondary Administration Education from the College of Education at Mississippi State University. Dr. Davis also serves as a minister at Truth Christian Center in Louisville where she has been a member for twenty years. Curtis and Joan Davis are Dr. Davis’ parents.

The NAACP thanks the Wal-Mart Foundation, Freedom Fund Banquet supporters, UAW, Winston County Self-Help and all who provided monetary donations and other contributions to support the Back-to-School Rally. Last year, 156 students were provided a bag of free school supplies; this year’s goal is 200 students. Additional monetary donations in the form of checks can be made out to NAACP and contributions of school supplies can be made to Janice Hopkins, NAACP Education Chairperson (662-705-2019) or Charles Hampton, NAACP President (662-805-0635).

Winston County school district students from Pre-K through Twelfth grades are encouraged t o begin the school year with a commitment to attend classes and succeed in all their course work and activities. Children must be accompanied by an adult to receive free school supplies.
