Friends of Dean Park, Inc.’s success at Walmart gathering donations

(By Elmetra Patterson

The Friends of Dean Park, Inc. (FODP) meets twice yearly at Walmart to solicit donations for special projects at Dean Park. Dean Park is the only park in Winston County that is run by the county. Because of the limited budget for the park, FODP was founded to assist with the upkeep and special projects. FODP was founded May 3, 2008 and will celebrate its 5th anniversary this month. The winner of the ‘Spring Garden Basket was won by Mamie Crosby. The basket was donated by Just Because I love you Gifts, 316 S. Church Avenue, Louisville, MS, Versie Estes, owner. Moncrief, who is also a master gardener stated, “We plan to use some of the funds to plant more knockout roses in the park. They are beautiful, bloom about 8 months of the year and are low maintenance. If any of you want to purchase one to donate in memory of someone, please bring it to the park an leave with one of our workers or call me at 662.736-3323”

The members of the Friends of Dean Park, Inc. have helped to clean-up the park and made it a beautiful place for outings. The landscape has changed from bottles and trash to beautiful flowers, trees and shrubbery. It is heavily booked for events throughout the year – picnics, family, church and class reunions, revivals, parties, talent shows, rummage sales, and festivals. It has a beautiful lake with bass, catfish and brim for fishing and a new modern playground. The new bathroom facility is about completed. It will make it convenient for seniors and disabled visitors who find it difficult to walk down the hill to the present one.

If you would like to become a member, $10 yearly is requested.

If you did not make it by Walmart to make your tax deductible donation, please mail it to: Friends of Dean Park, Inc.
