Watch Amy Showalter, native Mississippian, compete for one million dollars on NBC’s new summer hit “The Winner Is…” on Thursday July 25, 2013 at 8pm central.
This summer, NBC’s whips up its latest summer hit “The Winner Is…” which features talented solo singers, duets, and groups of all ages competing in head to head competition for the grand prize of one million dollars. The performers will be judged by a special in-studio panel of one hundred and one ‘music experts’ aptly named ‘The 101’ who will vote in each duel for the act they liked best. In a unique twist, each competitor will have the opportunity to negotiate a deal after they perform and before hearing their fate. They can “take the money and run” or choose to stay in the competition for the million.
Tune in on Thursday, July 25 at 8pm as one of Mississippi’s own, Amy Showalter, storms the stage and does her best to “wow” her way into the hearts of ‘The 101’ and move on to the finale for the million.
Amy, daughter of Sharon Showalter Moore of Madison County, is true Mississippi girl. Born in Columbus, she spent her youth in Louisville, graduated from Greenwood High School, got her music degree from Delta State in Cleveland, attended grad school at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, and participated in the Miss Mississippi pageant as Miss Delta State, Miss Dixie, and Miss Southern, respectively, where she was named a talent winner and 2nd alternate all three years. However, she didn’t sing. Nope. She played marimba!
“I’ve been a musician since birth,” says Amy. “I’m not kidding. Literally. My mama played music to me with headphones on her belly when I was in the womb.” So, it’s not surprising when she says she remembers ‘performing’ for her grandparents in Louisville (the late Lloyd and Ann Dowdy) when she was 4 or 5 years old and going around their neighborhood knocking on folk’s doors, introducing herself as “Miss College,” and asking if they would like her to ‘sing a song or do a little dance’ for them. Little did she know that eventually she would be performing around the world and back again including many performances in Las Vegas, the Middle East, the Far East, and even the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Amy now resides in California where she taught performing arts for over 10 years and developed a Bravo Award winning nationally recognized fine arts program at Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles.
No longer teaching full-time, Amy’s current projects include: the band, The Black Shamrocks – “Guinness Fueled Irish Rock”; the book, My Little Secret Remedy, a tiny book about women’s health issues (found on Amazon); and her life’s work ‘Believing the Body Beautiful – A Total Transformation Template,’ a women’s education, empowerment, and enlightenment program for the new millennium.
Although Amy relocated to Los Angeles a while ago, she still considers herself a Mississippi Magnolia. “You can take the girl outta Mississippi, but you can never take the Mississippi outta the girl” says Amy with her syrupy Mississippi accent still intact.
Needless to say, we know Amy is a Mississippi girl through and through and we wish her the best on the show. Go for the million, Amy!
Tune in this Thursday, July 11 at 8pm for the season premiere of NBC’s The Winner Is. Viewers who play along online also have a chance to win $10,000. Don’t miss it!
