Nanih Waiya Community Park still moving on

From press reports

On September 20, 2013, Ellis Houston, businessman and Nanih Waiya alum, purchased 39 acres in the Nanih Waiya Community and immediately sold the property to the corporation Friends of Nanih Waiya Community Park.

This park project seemed almost impossible until Mark Dillard saw this property was for sale and mentioned it to Mr. Houston.

The decision was made on August 1, 2013 to purchase the property due to tremendous support from the community members who attended the meeting on that date. Mr. Houston agreed and set the ball in motion. Since then the corporation has been formed and the non-profit status application has been submitted and is awaiting IRS approval. Currently the corporation is soliciting donations from anyone wishing to help as well as planning the First Annual Nanih Waiya Fall Festival and SWAMPTOWN 5K Run/Walk as a fund raising event. The Festival/5K will be October 19 on Mr. Houston’s property in Nanih Waiya.

Friends’ President Jerry Hemphill stated, “This is a great day for our community and a great beginning for our park. Kristy Woodruff and Mark Dillard had the idea and the will to make it happen and the good fortune to have someone like Ellis Houston there to kick this project into gear. Now it is time to break some ground!”

Anyone wishing to donate can send a check to Friends of Nanih Waiya Community Park, PO Box 83 Louisville, MS 39339. For more information regarding the Festival and 5K contact Kristy Woodruff at 662-803-5651 or Lee Robertson at 601-504-1255.
