Patriots celebrate 14-0 homecoming victory

By Wendell Womack

Homecoming Queen Ashley Bane and her court brought beauty, elegance, and charm to the crowd at the newly renovated Winston gymnasium last Friday night.

Meanwhile, out on Patriot Field under stormy skies on a rain soaked turf, her Patriots were bringing gloom and doom to the Central Holmes Trojans, as the Patriots captured their first victory of the year. Coming into the contest 0-4, the Patriots completely dominated the opponents by rolling up 278 offensive yards to the 45 total yard performance of the Trojans.

The Patriots received possession after an opening drive punt from the Trojans, and then quickly gave the ball back after a Patriot fumble. Both teams then exchanged punts for 3 series each until the 5:10 point in the second quarter. The Patriots then suffered another fumble turnover and the Trojans took over at their own 6 yard line with 2 seconds left in the first half.

As both teams went into the halftime, locked at 0-0, the Patriots had only dominated the clock and offensive attack by rolling up 135 in offense as compared to the opponents 14.

The second half saw a different scene as Winston added the first points with 10:58 left in the third quarter, when Logan Webb ran it 20 yards around the left end for the score with D.K. Boydstun adding the point after.

The Trojans then put together a potential scoring drive but were stopped at the Winston 26 yard line with 3:15 left in the third quarter when Dale Chancellor intercepted a Trojan pass. After taking over at their own 26, Winston put together the final scoring drive of the night that was capped off by another Webb touchdown run from 30 yards out. Boydstun then remained perfect for the night in extra points by making it a 14-0

Winston lead. Although the Patriots rolled up 19 first downs in rushing offense, the Winston defense performed outstanding by only allowing 4 first downs for the Trojans. Winston had a versatile offensive attack, that was led by Taylor Moody with 158 yards. He was followed by Logan Webb with 45 and two rushing touchdowns. Closely behind was Miles Johnson with 44 rushing yards and Hunter McElroy with 31.

The defense saw Hunter McElroy lead the attack with 6 stops, followed by Will Moody and Reed McCool with 5 each. Dale Chancellor was credited with an interception.

So as the Patriots have now experienced the taste of victory, they will need to stay hungry as they travel to Starkville Academy this week to take on another AAA powerhouse. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
