The November meeting of the Winston Garden Club was held on November 12 at Lake Tiak O’Khata in the Quilt Room. There were 10 members present.

Johnna Williamson led the Pledge of Allegiance and gave the invocation. Carolyn Mills introduced the speaker, Judy Sanders.

Judy Sanders is a well known local social studies teacher who is quite informed on the governmental state of our United States and how our federal government operates. Judy reminded us that the next government shutdown is scheduled for January 16, 2014. She gave numerous examples of government waste and cited many projects that do not help Americans. Judy explained the responsibilities of Congress in spending and debt. She also pointed out how riders are added to bills that have contributed to our national debt.

Following the program, dinner was served. The club concluded the evening with a brief business meeting. The members were reminded of the Christmas Tree Trimming event at Legion State Park on November 30. The Winston Garden Club participates in this event by helping provide cookies and desserts as well as participating in the trimming of the Christmas tree.

The next meeting will be held December 10 at Lake Tiak O’Khata. This will be the club’s Christmas gathering. Members were reminded to bring gifts to be given to local nursing home residents and also an ornament for a member exchange.
