NRHA Rural Health Fellows Program recognizes Smith

Mary Atkinson Smith is a board certified family nurse practitioner and surgical first assistant with Starkville Orthopedic Clinic in Starkville, MS. She also has additional certifications in orthopaedics and perioperative nursing. Smith is currently pursuing a post-master’s certificate in rural case management from the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing where she also serves as adjunct faculty. She is also a strong advocate for increasing healthcare access and quality of life among elderly and disabled homebound individuals residing in rural areas of Mississippi.

Smith is an active member of several professional nursing and healthcare related organizations and has successfully published in various nursing journals and a doctoral nursing textbook. She is a member of the Mississippi Nurses Foundation Board of Trustees and will also serve on the Mississippi Rural Health Association board beginning January 2014. She has served as the past Mississippi Nurses Association District 18 President and a Nurse in Washington Internship scholarship recipient. Smith was recently awarded the Nursing in Excellence Award from B Metro Magazine in Birmingham, AL.

Smith received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Mississippi University for Women, her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Mississippi School of Nursing, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing in Tuscaloosa, AL. She is a native of Winston County and a graduate of Louisville High School.
