Christian Friends help over 200 for Christmas

From staff reports

The community group Christian Friends held their annual Christmas Food Box deliveries on Dec. 10, which provides meals for the needy families during the holiday season.

The event is held every year and has become a staple of expressing the true meaning of Christmas for many residents of Winston County. President of the Christian Friends Society, Benny Hill, headed up the organizing of the assembly line filling of the boxes and discussed how the project has followed through so well over the years.

“Every year we have volunteers from various churches in the community and across the community come together and pack food that has been donated from various individuals and organizations,” Hill said. “This year we are around 204 boxes, with one box going to each family. We purchase and receive some free groceries to go in boxes so that each family will have a good Christmas.”

“So many come out and help as well as donate,” said Hill.

The project has been ongoing for decades with many of the volunteers playing a role in the project each year.

“The project started out with a group of men putting together a box of food for four or five families and it has continued to build over the years,” said Hill. “Some of the volunteers have been here as long as I have and others even longer.”

Hill has played a role in the project for more than a decade. Hill thanked all those who donated and helped with each aspect of the project.

The boxes that are given to families are filled with an assortment of items such as canned fruits, vegetables, cake mixes, crackers, canned meats, and other culinary delights. The assortment allows the recipients to provide a whole meal for their families for the holidays.

The Christian Friends Society also has a thrift store in downtown Louisville.

“The thrift shop enables the less fortunate families to have clothing at a lower price or free of charge,” Hill said.

The Christian Friends Society would like to thank everyone who contributed to the project this year with donations, volunteer work, contributions, etc. For more information about Christian Friends or to donate to the group or volunteer, persons may contact Christian Friends at 662-773-9319.
