Relay moving into high gear

The Winston County Relay for Life aims to raise thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society by walking on June 8 and holding fundraisers until that date. Presently, after a recent meeting the Relay for Life teams and organizers are seeking sponsors and teams. “I am ready to push this into high gear,” stated Kristi Stapp, Relay Co-chair. Any businesses, churches, civic and service clubs, families and individuals are invited to join in the Relay for Life by sponsoring a team to walk in the Relay or by sponsoring a community event and fund- raiser for the American Cancer Society. A team can be anything from a small group of friends to a huge group of co-workers. The goal for each team member to raise $100. Team participation ranges from simply participating in the walking event to arranging fundraising events for the team. All team captains are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings.

Relay for Life is a family-oriented team event where participants walk relay-style around a track and take part in fun activities off the track. The Winston County event will feature a Survivors’ Lap, a Caregivers’ Lap, competitions, entertainment, music and lots of food. A Luminaria Ceremony will be held to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who lost their battles with the disease. Everyone interested in fighting cancer by raising money for the American Cancer society is invited to the Relay for Life meeting and to the annual Relay event. American Cancer Representative Lauren Jeffreys, noted that Relay For Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Relay for Life luminaries The American Cancer Society and people throughout the United States are committed to winning the battle against cancer. Join people throughout Winston County to help in the fight against this dreaded disease by making a donation of $10 for a luminaria in honor or in memory of someone touched by cancer. Luminaries (with the names on them) will line the walking track the night of the event. During the event, all participants will share in the special luminaria ceremony; candles will be lit and names will be called of those for whom donations for luminaries have been received. Anyone interested in making a donation of $10 for a luminaria may request an order form at Penny’s from Heaven. People are encouraged to secure their luminaries early so that they may enjoy the activities the night of the event. Join in the fight against cancer.
