From press and staff reports
After weeks of hard work and dedication by many volunteers and organizers, the Winston County Relay for Life Teams are proud to host The American Cancer Society Relay for Life this Friday, May 31 at the Louisville High School campus.
This year’s event, entitled “Cancer Doesn’t Take A Holiday”, will feature a host of entertainment for all to share in. Before the actual walk begins, the WMC Relay for Life Team will host a reception at R.L. Hinze Stadium at 6 p.m. to honor and celebrate those who have overcome or currently fighting cancer.
Those planning to participate in the walk should sign in by 5:30 p.m. this Friday. T-Shirts can be picked up at this time as well. This year, the survivor lap will be followed by a lap recognizing caregivers and local health care providers who treat and take care of cancer patients.
During the Relay for Life event, a luminary service will be held to remember those who have died of cancer and to honor cancer survivors. These candlelit bags surround the track during the walk, each bearing the name of a person who has battled cancer. Luminaries are $10 each and the names listed on them will be read in a special ceremony at 10 p.m. that night
If you wish to purchase a luminary, you can visit Penny’s from Heaven in Louisville. They will also sell sky lanterns the night of the event. They will be $25.
All funds raised by the teams go to the American Cancer Society to help with research for a cure for cancer, services to cancer patients, and awareness for cancer prevention. Chairwoman Brandi Krajewski is looking for support from the community to assist in the battle against this disease.
“I hope that our community will come and support these great survivors and those who are currently battling cancer,” Krajewski said. “We need the support of the community. We need for anyone who wants to help join the fight against cancer to get active.”
There is still time for joining a team or sponsoring this wonderful event. For more information about teams or a business sponsoring, contact Ashley McCall at 601-421-9080, or email Brandi Krajewski at firstname.lastname@example.org.
