The Louisville Board of Aldermen paved the way for Family Dollar to invest $1.5 million into bringing a store to Louisville.
The aldermen approved three variances for the store during the regular board meeting Tuesday, January 15.
The city’s planning commission had recommended to the board to approve two of the variances and disallow a third variance which requires 20 feet of setbacks from the front and back door of the business to the property line. The two recommend variances to approve were the percentage of building compared to size of lot and the number of parking places in relation to size of business.
The zoning board members present noted that the variance for setbacks would be from 20 feet down to 6.9 feet and 7.8 feet and would set a poor precedence.
Steve Roberts representing the landowners and Paul Hogue representing Family Dollar Corporation presented the plans and the reasons for the variances.
The board voted unanimously to approve all three variances.
“Zoning board did a great job…but telling a $1.5 million investment to go home over this distance should not be done,’ said Roberts. “Never has a town turned down Family Dollar and many have granted variances.”
The aldermen agreed. “Business is hard to come by and we have a good business wanting to come here.. and I just can’t deny it,” said Alderman Richard Caperton.
The store will locate on Church Street in place of the old State Farm Building and is expected to hire 10 to 12 employees.
In other business, the board of aldermen: • Heard from the Mayor’s Youth Council who provided a more detailed report including fines and enforcement of a saggy pants ordinance. The Youth council encouraged the board to examine and discuss such an ordinance. • Heard from Carnetta Hudson a representative of N-Fusion, a local nonprofit organization in place to help at risk youth. Hudson noted the group aimed at helping youth from 14-21 and had 97 youth enrolled so far in the program which is setup through a community counseling grant. • Discussed a setting up another rental property ordinance public meeting before voting on any measure see rental ordinance article in today’s edition. • Approved advertising for paving project to be paid for with the general obligation funds. • Accepted resignation from the zoning board. • Authorize notice of hearing from community counseling for permitted use of property to be held at the Feb. 18 zoning board meeting. • Authorized payments and closeout contract on airport turnaround project. • Authorized a public hearing on the 2013 CBG projects. • Approved four training classes for police officers. • Accept Keith Alexander’s resignation as a police officer and appoint him as a reserve police officer. • Approved prisoner housing agreement with the county. • Rescinded and reapproved a plan to introduce into legislation a plan to apply a 3 percent hotel and motel tax in the area for tourism. The new order clarified the tourism board members qualifications.
The next regular aldermen meeting is Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
