EC Softball squad earns second sweep of Alabama Southern

East Central Community College’s fast-pitch softball team recorded its second doubleheader sweep of Alabama Southern in 2014 by posting a 4-1 win in the opener followed by a 10-1 thumping in the nightcap Monday, Feb. 24 on the Decatur campus.

The Lady Diamond Warriors improved to 11-1 under head coach Kristin Chaney, assistant Courtney Nunn and volunteer assistant Kasie Buckley following the non-division contests.

In the first game, Ty Buckley and Lindsey Beard each had solo home runs to lead the EC offense. Beard also contributed a single.

Buckley is a product of Neshoba Central High School. Beard is a graduate of Clarkdale High School.

Other EC hitters were Kaylin Hopkins of Louisville, double; and Mallory Turner of West Lauderdale, single.

Kendra Wilson went the distance to record the win. The sophomore hurler allowed no earned runs and four hits in the seven-inning matchup. She also fanned three batters and walked one. Wilson is a product of South Lamar (Ala.) High School.

The second contest was called after five innings.

EC hitters were Turner, two singles; Beard, Morgan Porter of Enterprise and Amber McBroom of Brandon, singles each.

Beard and McBroom led in RBIs with two each. Hayley Stephens of Union and Karoline Holsonback of South Lamar (Ala.) High School were credited with an RBI each.

Makayla Kelly picked up the win, as the Nederland (Texas) High School product allowed one run on five hits. She also fanned a batter.

The Lady Diamond Warriors travel to Gadsden State Community College for a twin bill scheduled Tuesday, Feb. 25, beginning at 1 p.m. on the Gadsden, Ala., campus.
