ECCC Baseball staff plans pitching, hitting clinics for young athletes

East Central Community College’s baseball program is once again offering hitting and pitching clinics for young athletes on the Decatur campus, announced Neal Holliman, Diamond Warrior head coach.

Holliman said both sessions are designed for ages six to 12 in an effort to assist the young baseball players as they prepare for the spring season.

Hitting sessions are scheduled on four consecutive Thursdays beginning January 30 and ending on February 20. Instruction will be provided from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. in the Indoor Practice Facility located in Founders’ Gym. The facility includes two full-length cages, an area for bunting and several hitting stations.

Pitching sessions will be held from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on four consecutive Thursdays beginning Feb. 3 and ending and on Feb. 24. Sessions will be divided between Founders Gym and the South Campus gym. Instruction will be provided from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.

Cost is $75 for the pitching clinic and $100 for hitting instruction. Participants can attend both clinics for $150. Fees include insurance and a camp T-shirt.

The deadline to register is Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.

“Both camps were very successful last year,” said Holliman, “and we anticipate another great response this year. We want to encourage participants to register early since space is limited.”

Holliman and first-year assistant coaches Scott DeLoach and Ronald Sims, and team members will provide instruction.

Activities for the batting session include tee drills, soft toss, wiffle balls, bunting techniques and other hitting-related exercises.

Pitchers will learn the fundamental steps of a delivery as well as throw a supervised pen each week. Participants will also be instructed in other pitching aspects including arm care, pick moves and grips.

Check-in for the hitting clinic will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 in Founders’ Gym.

Check-in for the pitching clinic is scheduled at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, also in Founders’ Gym.
