ECCC Kids’ College includes numerous activities

A Spa Kamp for ages 5-15 on July 1-2 kicks off the 2014 Kids’ College Program at East Central Community College in Decatur.

Activities for ages 5-12 continue during the month of July with classes ranging from athletics to chefs in training and mad scientists.

The registration fee is $50 per class. Each participant receives a Kids’ College Tshirt.

Daniele Brock, ECCC Housing and Student Activities Director, serves as Kids’ College director.

The registration deadline is May 30, 2014.

“We are excited about this year’s Kids College, which offers a variety of classes that participants will enjoy. We had a great turnout last year and are looking forward to a larger one this year!” Brock said.

Course offerings include the following:

July 1-2

Spa Kamp: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Ages 5-9, Tuesday, July 1; ages 10-15, Wednesday, July 2. Students will learn the steps of a guided facial, have their hair washed and styled, have their nails painted and receive a foot bath and pedicure. ECCC cosmetology instructors Wanda Brackeen and Carla Jacome-Cluff will supervise the day’s activities and cosmetology students will perform procedures.

July 7-11

Little Warrior Cheerleading: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn cheers and stunts. Chafoney Poole will provide instruction.

Little Warrior Soccer: Ages 5-8, 10:30 a.m. to noon; Ages 9-12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn the techniques of dribbling, passing, defending and scoring. ECCC men’s soccer coach Kenneth Thompson will serve as instructor.

Little Warrior Basketball for Boys: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9 – 12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will receive instruction in the areas of dribbling, passing, shooting and offensive and defensive plays. ECCC assistant men’s basketball coach Devarus Walker will serve as instructor.

Theatre: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9-12, 8:30 to 10 a.m. Participants will learn theatre skills and techniques through creative exercises, games and performances of short theatre plays. ECCC English instructor and director of the EC Players Stacey Pollock, will serve as instructor.

Art: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture to make them a better artist! ECCC art instructor Chris Brady will serve as instructor.

July 14-18

Drawing/Painting: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn basic drawing and painting techniques and learn to use a variety of different art utensils. Ben Wall will provide instruction.

Little Warrior Baseball: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants learn various skills including pitching, hitting, catching and running, along with offensive and defensive plays. Scott DeLoach, ECCC assistant baseball coach, will provide instruction.

Little Warrior Tennis: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn and practice basic grips, forehand, and backhand strokes, how to serve and volley. Coach Pete Mazzella will serve as the instructor.

Archery: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9-12, 8:30 a.m. to 10. Archery for beginners is sponsored by Archery Addicts Anonymous. Learn the basics of shooting a compound bow like a PRO in competitive 3-D, Field, and hunting applications. Terry Rivers will serve as instructor.

Little Warrior Basketball for Girls: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10 a.m. Participants will receive instruction in the areas of dribbling, passing, shooting and offensive and defensive plays. ECCC assistant women’s basketball coach Kiara Ruffin will serve as instructor.

Musical Creations: Ages 5-8, 10:30 to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 a.m. to 10. Participants will take part in a week of singing, choreography, playing rhythm instruments and handbells, creating, listening and responding to music. ECCC keyboard and music instructor Natalie Emmons will provide instruction.

July 21-25

Dance Into Shape: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will have fun dancing to the latest music while getting healthy with exercising. Chafoney Poole will serve as instructor.

Little Warrior Football: Ages 5-8, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m.; Ages 9-12, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn skills needed to pass, score, catch and kick while mastering offensive and defensive plays. Eric Gray and Charles Jones, ECCC assistant football coaches, will provide instruction.

Little Warrior Softball: Ages 5-8, 10:30 a.m. to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn the skills needed to pitch, hit, catch and run, along with offensive and defensive plays. Courtney Nunn, ECCC assistant softball coach, will provide instruction.

EC’s Chefs in Training: Ages 5-8, 10:30 a.m. to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will learn to make simple dishes full of flavor and fun! Culinary Arts Technology instructor Barry Karrh will serve as instructor.

Mad Scientists: Ages 5-8, 10:30 a.m. to noon; Ages 9 -12, 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. Participants will experiment with making lots of crazy concoctions. Make gruesome goo, monster bubbles and an active volcano. Learn that Science is fun. ECCC Biology instructor Curt Skipper will provide instruction.
