ECCC Softball squad falls in Division Opener; looking to March 5 matchup

Division action began on a disappointing note for East Central Community College’s fast-pitch softball squad, which dropped a twin bill to Jones County Junior College Saturday, March 1 on the Decatur campus.

The Lady Diamond Warriors (12-4, 0-2) were outscored 14-5 in the opener and fell 14-7 in the second contest to the No. 15 Lady Bobcats (15-0, 2-0).

Ty Buckley belted a three-run homer and Lindsey Beard blasted a two-run dinger to lead EC’s offense in the first game.

Buckley is a product of Neshoba Central High School and Beard hails from Clarkdale High School.

Other EC hitters were Hayley Stephens of Union, double; and Mallory Turner of West Lauderdale and Morgan Porter of Enterprise, singles each. Turner scored twice and Porter tallied once.

Kendra Wilson took the loss in the six-inning matchup. She allowed eight earned runs on 13 hits. She fanned four batters and walked eight. Wilson is a product of South Lamar (Ala.) High School.

In the second contest, Buckley and Beard each homered to again lead the offense. Buckley belted a two-run shot in the sixth inning and Beard sent a solo shot over the wall in the second inning. Beard also doubled and singled.

Anna Katherine Nowell also had a productive outing at the plate, as the Leake Academy product belted two singles and collected two RBIs.

Other hitters were Turner, Stephens, Amber McBroom of Brandon and Kaylin Hopkins of Louisville, singles each.

Porter was credited with an RBI.

Runs were scored by Beard (2), Nikki Triplett (2) of Forest, McBroom, Porter and Buckley.

Makayla Kelly recorded the loss in the seven-inning battle. Kelly allowed 11 earned runs on 14 hits. She fanned one batter and walked three. Kelly is a product of Nederland (Texas) High School.

The Lady Diamond Warriors continue MACJC South Division competition by traveling to Meridian Community College Wednesday, March 5. Doubleheader action gets under way at 2 p.m. on the Meridian campus. (Games were previously scheduled for Tuesday, March 4.)

EC battles division foe Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Friday, March 7, beginning at 2 p.m. on the Decatur campus.

EC’s softball program is led by head coach Kristin Chaney and assistants Courtney Nunn and Kasie Buckley.
