Home runs by A. J. Peeler of Neshoba Central and Philadelphia High School product Lajoya Griffin lifted East Central Community College’s fast-pitch softball team to a 3-2 victory in the opening contest with Baton Rouge Community College Saturday, March 17 on the Decatur campus.
The Lady Diamond Warriors had much easier time in the second contest and cruised 7-1 to complete the sweep and improve to 19-6 overall under head coach Scott Hill and assistant Kristin Chaney.
Peeler also singled in the opener. Other hitters were Marlee Massey of Neshoba Central and Haylee Roberts of Enterprise, singles each.
Tenna Patterson picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits in the seven-inning matchup. She fanned five batters and walked one. Patterson is a product of Lexington (Ala.) High School.
In the second game, Peeler, Massey and Kelsi Watson of Smithville led the offense with two hits each. Peeler and Massey each doubled and singled and Watson had two singles. Haelie Allen of Leake Academy contributed a triple. Allen and Watson also led in RBIs with two each.
Other hitters were Kaetlen Brown of Edgewood Academy in Deatsville, Ala., Dakota Vowell of Neshoba Central and Patterson, singles each.
Runs were scored by Allen (2), Massey, Peeler, Vowell, Griffin and Mary Sanders of Vidalia, La., and a product of Adams Christian Academy.
Sanders also got the win, as she allowed the one run on six hits through seven innings. She fanned two batters.
EC hosts Jones County Junior College Monday, March 19, in doubleheader action previously scheduled Friday, March 9. Game times are 3 and 5 p.m. on the Decatur campus.
The Lady Diamond Warriors travel to Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wednesday, March 21. Doubleheader action gets under way at 3 p.m. on the Decatur campus.
