ECCC Tennis squads Fall to Gulf Coast

East Central Community College’s tennis squads dropped decisions to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in matches held Friday, Feb. 28 in Wiggins.

The Warriors were edged 5-4 and the Lady Warriors were outscored by a 7-1 margin.

EC winners in men’s singles were Juan Miranda of Forest, who defeated Matt Barlow, 7-5, 1-6, 11-9; Javon Yarbrough of Louisville, who clipped DeAngelo Vaxter, 6-1, 6-1; and Ethan Rigdon of Union, who beat Tyler Youngblood, 0-6, 6-2, 10-6.

In other results, Daniel Giles of Union lost to Travous Wilson, 6-4, 6-2; Brandon St. Clair of Newton County fell to Bobby Vo, 6-0, 6-4; and Tanner Moore of Winston Academy dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Josh Johnson.

In men’s doubles, Warriors Miranda and Giles teamed to defeat Wilson/Johnson, 8-6. In other results, Yarbrough and Moore fell to Barlow/Vaxter, 8-6; and St. Clair and Rigdon fell to Vo/Youngblood, 8-2.

Alana Turner of Florence was the lone Lady Warrior winner, as she earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kit Chowdhary in women’s singles.

In other results, Hannah Peoples of Winston Academy fell to Christa Owen, 6-0, 6-1; Amber Pierce of Leake Academy lost to Tori Rose, 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 10-6; Nan Hartness of Winston Academy fell to Brittany Buker, 6-2, 6-0; Hannah Smith of Leake Academy lost to Annissia Johnson, 6-1, 6-3; and Lauren Peterson of Forest fell 6-1 6-3 to Aliesha Barlow.

In women’s doubles, Turner and Pierce were edged by Owen/Chowdhary, 8-5; Peoples and Hartness were clipped by Rose/Buker, 8-5; and Peterson and Katlyn Patrick of Forest were blanked 8-0 by Johnson/Barlow.

East Central hosts Northeast Mississippi Community College Tuesday, March 4, beginning at 2 p.m. on the Decatur campus.
