Former Winston Academy standout Tyler Sullivan set a new school record for Delta State University on Saturday afternoon as he accounted for 583 yards of total offense to lead Delta State to a 63-55 win over Valdosta State in a big homecoming win for the Statesman.
Sullivan, a redshirt freshman, hit on 34-of-48 passes for 520 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 63 yards and two more scores on 18 attempts.
The victory, paired with North Alabama’s 30-27 overtime thriller over West Alabama, created a logjam at the top of the Gulf South Conference standings. DSU, UNA and UWA are all tied at 4-1 in league play headed into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Sullivan’s 583 total yards eclipsed the previous school mark of 508 yards set by Scott Eyster on Oct. 4, 2004 at Valdosta State.
The Statesmen took the opening drive 75-yards in 11 plays, a Sullivan connected with Ricky Hunt on a 23-yard touchdown pass to put DSU up 7-0 with 12:05 to play in the first quarter. After Valdosta tied the game ate 14-14 early in the second quarter, Sullivan connected with Hunt for a 26-yard touchdown pass to go up 21-14 with 9:31 left in the half.
With 4:13 left in the half Sullivan once again broke a tie as he hit Patrick Bethley for a 38-yard touchdown pass.
After holding the Blazers on the first possession of the second half, the Statesmen struck pay dirt on Sullivan’s 3-yard touchdown scamper to close a 14-play, 70-yard drive to take the 35-21 lead with 7:03 in the third. DSU converted on two key third down plays in the drive to take the two touchdown lead.
Sullivan and Hunt once again blistered the Blazer secondary, as the freshman quarterback connected with the junior receiver on a 66-yard touchdown, their third of the game, to put DSU up 42-21 with 2:28 to go in third.
Delta State welcomes Concordia College to Parker Field-McCool Stadium next Saturday for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for Noon.
Sullivan and York Earn Gulf South Conference Player of the Week Awards
The Delta State University football team picked up its seventh and eighth Gulf South Conference Players of the Week award winners after the 63-55 thriller against Valdosta State University on Homecoming this past Saturday, Nov. 2, at Parker Field – McCool Stadium.
Freshman Tyler Sullivan picked up his second GSC Offensive Player of the Week award after breaking another DSU record for total offense in a game. Sullivan accounted for six total touchdowns, four passing and two rushing in the victory over VSU. The Louisville, Miss. native was 34-of-48 passing for 520 yards and tallied 63 yards on the ground for 583 yards of combined offense.
Sophomore Jarvis York garnered his first GSC Special Teams Player of the Week award after making a key return against the Blazers. Valdosta threatened late in the game and closed the scoring margin to 56-48 with 1:54 remaining; VSU then lined up for an onside kick but York took the ball and raced into the end zone that stretched the Statesmen lead back out to a multiple possession game and secured the victory for DSU.
Delta State returns to Parker Field – McCool Stadium for Senior Day against Concordia College – Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 9, with kick off slated for 1 p.m.
Statesmen Football climbs one spot in NCAA South Region Rankings
CLEVELAND, Miss. – After Saturday’s 63-55 victory over the Valdosta State University, the Delta State University football climbed one spot to seventh in the latest NCAA South Region Poll, as released by the NCAA on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013. The top three remained unchanged, as Lenior-Rhyne continued its stanglehold on the No. 1 ranking. The top six teams in each region advance to the NCAA Division II Football Championship Tournament
