Tupelo Christian School swept through the Grace Christian School Basketball Tournament this past week to win the championship.
Diamond Grove finished second, while Starkville Christian was third and Grace Christian fourth. Grace Christian’s Lucas Borntrager average 24 points per game in the tournament to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.
GCS played four games in the tourney, winning one and losing three. The Eagles opened with a 70-34 win over New Life, before falling to Choctaw County 57-42, Diamond Grove 55-45, and Starkville Christian 84-57.
Grace Christian outscored New Life in each quarter, putting the game away in the fourth when the Eagles scored 24 points, while allowing just two. Borntrager led the winners with 27 points, while Daniel Halfacre scored 15, Landon Christopher eight and Landon Weeks six.
GCS only trailed Choctaw County 36-32 after three quarters of play, but were outscored 19-8 in the fourth quarter. Borntrager hit for 25 points,followed by Dalton Hartness with 11.
Diamond Grove jumped out to a 16-9 first quarter lead over GCS and was able to hold on for the 10-point win. Borntrager scored 30 for the Eagles, with Halfacre hitting for six and Alex Taylor four.
Starkville Christian outscored grace 29-18 in the second quarter to turn a three-point lead after one quarter into a 48-34 halftime advantage. Borntrager had 14 and Halfacre 12 for the Eagles, while Weeks scored 10 and Michael Fuller nine.
