Although Cathy Barnes lives in Greenwood, she still has ties to her hometown of Louisville.
When a line of thunderstorms and tornadoes struck the state on Monday, Barnes said, she thought of people back home.
Barnes went home Tuesday and saw the storm’s devastation. A tornado killed 10 people in Winston County, destroyed more than 1800 buildings and ripped a half-mile-wide path through the town.
After returning to Greenwood, Barnes talked with fellow Louisville native Holly Miller. The women decided to take up collections of urgently needed items for the town of about 6,600 people and the Winston County.
Those wishing to send donations by check may send them to: Renasant Bank Disaster Relief, Attention Teresa Hopkins, 301 N. Church, Louisville, MS 39339.
Barnes said the rebuilding process in Louisville will be slow and painful.
“It’s going to be a long time before it’s back,” she said.
