Habitat for Humanity holds fundraiser

From staff and press reports

The Winston County Habitat for Humanity held a musical fundraiser Friday, Nov. 2.

The Red Hills Strings entertained a small but enthusiastic crowd for the event while raising much needed funds for the Winston County Habitat for Humanity.

The Winston County Habitat for Humanity builds affordable, energy- efficient homes for qualified families. The group is in the midst of working on its third home for a family in Winston County. The local chapter obtains funding exclusively from funds raised locally.

In addition to the music, Noxapater Mayor Tommy Gardner welcomed the attendees and thanked them for coming out for the event. Organizers also recognized all the businesses who donated items to help raise funds.

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 and has built more than 350,000 houses around the world. The goal of the organization is to raise money to build homes for good families in need in order to make it easier for them to afford low-cost, fixed mortgage payments. Successful applicants must agree to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, provide money for a down payment and for insurance for the first year, and participate in homeowner’s education classes. They must also be financially able to make their mortgage payments. All Habitat mortgages are at zero percent interest.

Once a family is selected each adult in the family is required to put in at least 300 hours of “sweat equity.” That volunteer work can involve actual construction on the home or volunteer work on other Habitat projects, including office work.

And they aren’t free. Apart from the 300 plus hours of “sweat equity” the adults contribute to the organization, a small monthly payment is required as well. The average payments on the homes built by Habitat in Winston County are $200 per month. The group also helps the homeowners by providing training and information classes on new home ownership.

If anyone would like to get involved in the project as a volunteer, contact the Chamber of Commerce office. The group seeks volunteers who wish to improve Winston County and the lives of others.
