From press reports
There is a new program in Winston County to promote health among our church families.
A faith based health ministry called “Healthy for GOoD” is designed to help church members think about ways they can support each other. Church Health Teams are working together with church families to think about ways to be healthier (body, mind, and spirit).
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that two-thirds of adults and one-third of children are overweight or obese. We keep learning more about the ways obesity puts us at risk for many chronic diseases. Obesity is linked with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other serious conditions.
The “Healthy for GOoD” program encourages church members to become more active and help one another adopt healthier lifestyles. Several local churches are already working together to assist their members live healthier lives.
The Coalition for a Healthy Winston County is funded by a 5 year grant aimed at preventing diabetes and its complications. This is our third year to participate in the grant. By training Church Health Teams, interested members are learning ways they can help others to make some changes. Working together, local people are already seeing some results.
The “Healthy for GOoD” program encourages activities to help families become more physically active and eat healthier meals. Church groups are considering things they can do together. Some have a walking club, cooking classes, healthy food potlucks, healthy lifestyle bulletin boards, and guest speakers to promote health and answer questions. This nondenominational program aims to teach families to learn, play, pray, and work together. and become healthier. The next training session will be in Macon, MS at the Civic Center on Saturday October 27, 2012 with registration starting at 8 a.m. and the meeting from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If you would like more information about the coalition or the “Healthy for GOoD” program please call: Brenda Johnson at 773-5209 or Janice Hopkins at 773-7743.
