February is Dental and Heart Health month. On Wednesday, February 5th, Mrs. Holly Potts from McReynolds Orthodontics came to Fair Elementary to discuss the importance of dental health to the first and second grade students. The students learned the proper technique for brushing their teeth, the importance of good oral hygiene, and the reason why these things are of great importance for their overall health. Here are some tips for good oral health:

Oral Hygiene Basics:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day

Brush for two minutes (or sing “Happy Birthday” song 4 times)

Remember to brush your tongue

Floss your teeth once a day

Visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and check up

Use a soft bristly tooth brush

Replace your toothbrush after you are sick or when bristles are worn

If you cannot brush after lunch, at least rinse your mouth with water

Brush or rinse after eating or drinking sugary foods and drinks

Early Warning Signs Indicating it is Time for an Orthodontic Exam:

Early or late loss of baby teeth

Difficulty in chewing or biting

Mouth breathing

Finger sucking or other oral habits

Crowding, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth

Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude or retrude

Speech difficulty

Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth

Protruding teeth

Teeth that meet in an abnormal way or don’t meet at all

Facial imbalance or asymmetry

Grinding or clenching of teeth

Fair Elementary will be joining other schools across Mississippi and Louisiana in a program that will be instrumental in raising funds for lifesaving cancer research. Fair Elementary’s students will be taking part in The Leukemia &Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients. During a three-week period (February 3rd – February 21st), students collect spare change to support LLS’s mission: To cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
