Lady Patriots run winning steak to six games

The Winston Academy girls basketball team swept through three more games last week to run their record to 13-4 on the season and extend their winning streak to six games.

The Lady Patriots opened the week with a 52-30 home win over Kirk Academy before rolling past Tri-County Academy 45-21 on Tuesday and then taking a big 42-22 win over homestanding Manchester Academy on Friday.

The Patriots and Lady Patriots are set to return to action on Thursday when they host Manchester, before entertaining Leake on Saturday. Varsity action begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday and 4;30 p.m. on Saturday.

Winston jumped out to a 25-12 halftime lead against Kirk and easily held on for the victory. Marianne Ward tossed in 14 points to lead WA in scoring, while Darby Nowell scored 10 and Katie McCool and Hayden Hudspeth pitched in with eight apiece.

The Lady Patriots outscored visiting Tri-County 17-5 in the third quarter to stretch their 20-9 half-time lead into a 23-point margin going into the final quarter in their 45-21 win over TCA. McCool led the way for the winners with 13 points, while Hudspeth tallied 10 and Abigail McCool had six.

The second quarter was the big one for WA against Manchester. After leading 12-6 after one quarter of play the Lady Pats outscored the home team 12-4 in the second quarter to take a 24-10 halftime advantage.

Ward led Winston with 13 points, while McCool scored 10 and Hudspeth had eight.
