Due to poor weather the Winston Academy Lady Patriots’ opening round game in the MAIS AA North State Tournament in Canton was moved from Tuesday to Thursday night.
Winston Academy, ranked No. 5 in the state in MAIS GIrls AA by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, will take on North Delta at 4 p.m.
The Lady Patriots finished second in the district tournament that was hosted by Winston Academy, by falling to nemesis Leake Academy 82-53. The Lady Patriots led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 24-6 in the second quarter as Leake took a 40-23 halftime lead that it would not relinquish.
Marianne Ward knocked down 13-of-15 free throws to lead WA with 19 points in the loss to Leake, while Katie McCool scored 17.
Winston handily defeated Oak Hill Academy 48-31 on Friday night to earn a spot in the district finals. Ward scored 21 points against OHA, including going 9-of-12 from the charity stripe. McCool pitched in 16 points for the winners, while Darby Nowell scored eight.
The WA boys saw their season come to an end on Tuesday when they were defeated by Canton Academy 71-45 in the quarterfinals.
Brock Baker scored 15 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Pats, while Miles Johnson also claimed nine boards to go with six points.
