The Lady Tigers of Noxapater HIgh School have not only gotten off to a 5-0 start this basketball season, they have picked up a little statewide notoriety as well.

The latest rankings by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger have Noxapater listed as the No. 4 girls team in MHSAA Class 1A behind Bogue Chitto, Stringer and Hinds AHS. Salem is No. 5.

“The Clarion-Ledger poll is huge but we are focusing on one ballgame at a time,” said Noxapater head girls coah Pam Winstead. “District play starts this week and we are going to continue to work hard and up our level of play every game.”

Noxapater was set to host Philadelphia on Tuesday, before visiting Nanih Waiya for a district game on Thursday and then traveling to Eupora on Friday.

The Lady Tigers picked up their fifth win of the season in the Louisville Classic on Saturday when the defeated Eupora 58-39.

“We started very slow and had a sluggish first half,” Winstead said of her team which lead by only a single point over the Lady Eagles after two quarters of play. “We came out after halftime and adjusted the defense and had a 10-0 run and finished strong.”

Brittany Triplett led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Kiera Phillips scored 14 and Hanna Hamilton had 12 points and nine boards. Breanna Glass tossed in nine for the winners, while Treasure Lynch had seven points and four assists.

“The girls are playing together for the first time in two years and are establishing their own level of play,” Winstead said. “I am extremely proud of their effort and attitude. They are finally understanding what it takes to win ballgames.”

The Noxapater boys lost to Eupora 49-26 to fall to 0-4 on the season. Eupora led 15-5 after one quarter and 31-8 at the half to put the game away early. No other information was provided by deadline for the Noxapater boys.
