The Nanih Waiya Lady Warriors will be playing host to MHSAA Class 4A fast-pitch softball power Newton County on Friday for a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader. NW was set to host West Lowndes on Tuesday to close out region play. A win in one of the two games against WL would assure the Lady Warriors of the region title.
“We have been playing some really good competition,” NW head coach Ron Swart said of his 13-7 Lady Warriors. “We have been beating the teams we are suppose to beat and have been competing well against the rest. We are playing these games this week to help get us ready for anything we might face when we get into the 1A playoffs.”
The playoffs actually start this week, but the region champions get a first-round bye.
Last week the Lady Warriors lost to Class 5A juggernaut Neshoba Central 10-0, then defeated Sebastopol 18-11. On Monday the Warriors began the week with a 2-0 road loss to Class 4A Northeast Lauderdale.
Neshoba scored four runs in the sixth inning to put the game away last Tuesday. Marlee Parkes spanked a double for Nanih Waiya, while Ryan Holdiness had a single.
Nanih Waiya trailed 6-5 after five innings against Sebastopol, but erupted for 11 runs in the top of the sixth to take control of the contest.
Ryan Holdiness cranked out a homer, two doubles and a triple to pace Nanih Waiya’s 18-hit attack, while Parkes had three doubles, a single and drove in four runs for the winners. Reagan Holdiness had a homer, single and three RBIs for NW, while Ashley Thames, Hope Thames, and Krysten Eaves pick dup two singles each. Meagan Johnson and Brantlie Sheets each singled for the winners.
Ryan Holdiness drove in four runs, while Ashley Thames and Eaves had two RBIs and Sheets had one and was the winning pitcher.
Northeast Lauderdale scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the win on Monday night. Parkes, Johnson and Eaves had a hit each for Nanih Waiya in the game, while Ryan Holdiness pitched well, striking out six and allowing just two hits and no walks.
