LHS takes division win

The Louisville Wildcats traveled to Kosciusko last Friday night and grabbed another Class 4A, Region 4, District 4 win defeating the Whippets, 28-20.

Kosciusko started the scoring in the first quarter when Jabri Selmon entered the end zone from one yard out. The Wildcats blocked the extra point, but the Whippets had gained a 6-0 lead.

The Louisville offense, which was silent during the first quarter, exploded in the second quarter adding three touchdowns to the scoreboard.

Early in the second quarter, junior quarterback Wyatt Roberts found receiver Desmond Goss in the end zone with a 31-yard touchdown pass. Dalton Hudspeth provided the extra point the Wildcats would need to take a 7-6 lead over Kosciusko.

With the Whippets in possession of the ball again, the Louisville defense dominated forcing Kosciusko to punt. However, Anthony Gund blocked the punt keeping the ball on the Whippet 5-yard line. The Wildcats capitalized on Gund’s blocked punt with a one-yard quarterback sneak by Roberts. Hudspeth added the PAT, and Louisville had the lead and would hold on to it for the rest of the game, 14-6.

Right before halftime, the Wildcats continued to increase their lead. Roberts connected with Dontea Jones 30 yards through the air for another Louisville touchdown. Hudspeth was successful with the extra point.

The Wildcats took a 21-6 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

The third quarter was unproductive for both teams and remained scoreless.

The Whippets added another touchdown in the fourth quarter, but on the ensuing kickoff, Goss made a 76-yard dash with the return putting the Wildcats on the Kosciusko 17 yard line. Louisville did not let this scoring opportunity get away. A few plays later, Roberts entered the end zone from the one. Hudspeth added the extra point and the Wildcats had a 28-13 lead.

With just 36 seconds left in the game, the Whippets managed another touchdown but it would not be enough to overcome the Louisville lead, 28-20.

On the offensive side of the ball, senior running back Cass Love led the rushing attack with 24 carries for 108 yards. Goss followed with five carries for 18 yards while Roberts had 10 carries for 11 yards with two touchdowns.

Roberts was 5-16 through the air for 94 yards with two touchdowns.

Jones had two receptions for 38 yards with a touchdown, while Goss had one reception for 31 yards with a touchdown. Drew Lee had had one reception for 14 yards while Lawilliam Carter had one reception for 11 yards.

On defense, Jeremy Sangster led with 12 stops and two sacks. Dylan Nicholson followed with 10 stops, while Raquel Graham had seven stops. Stefan Brown had six stops and an interception.

The Wildcats now hold a 5-3 overall record and are 2-0 in district play.

This Friday night Louisville is back on the road. The Wildcats will travel to Caledonia to take on the Confederates. The Confederates have a 4-4 overall record and have yet to gain to division win, 0-2. Caledonia was recently defeated by Houston, 55-21.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
