The LHS tennis team recently participated in the Regional Competition held at Ridgeland High School. 37 matches were played over the course of the day, with LHS finishing 3rd overall in the standings. Other teams that participated were Kosciusko (1st place), Houston (2nd), MSMS (4th), Noxubee Co. (5th), and Leake Central (6th). LHS, which was ranked #4 in the district going into the Regional, have lost matches this season only in tiebreakers. The girls doubles group of Ashley Shields and Asia Sherrod won the district tournament going into the Regional, and only lost one match the entire season in a tiebreaker. Javon Yarbrough was the #2 seed in the district going into the tournament, and lost only one match this season in a tiebreaker. In the first round of the tournament, LHS boys’ doubles group Tykevious Houston and Carlos Goss were eliminated 0-6, 2-6 by Noxubee Co. In mixed doubles, the duo of Christian Browner and Fancy Goss were eliminated by Noxubee Co. 1-6, 2-6. In girls’ doubles, Brittany Coleman and Shanteeze Carter were eliminated in a tiebreaker by Kosciusko 6-6 (lost tiebreaker set 2-7), 6-4, 4-6. In girls’ singles, Destiny Goodin won her first round match 6-0, 6-0. In second round action, girls’ doubles duo Shields and Sherrod defeated Houston 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. In girls’ singles, Goodin was eliminated by Kosciusko 2-6, 2-6. Yarbrough, who received a first round bye, defeated MSMS 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the fial round. In third round action, Shields and Sherrod defeated Kosciusko 6-6 (lost tiebreaker 2-7), 6-4, 6-4 to win their bracket. Yarbrough would go on to be eliminated by Kosciusko’s Patrick Adams 3-6, 2-6. Shield and Sherrod would again play Kosciusko, but would be defeated 1-6, 0-6 in the final round. Yarbrough, being the district tournament runner-up and the Regional runner-up, earned himself a position at the upcoming State Tournament on May 7-8 at Ridgeland High School. Starting time for the event will be 9 a.m.
