The Mayors Youth Council was formed by Mayor Will Hill in 2012. The Youth Council consists of volunteers between the age groups of 7-12 and 13-17, and aims to teach students leadership and service skills that will help them pave a successful future.
On Monday, July 22, 2013 a group of these students dedicated a full day of service to the Louisville community by visiting local nursing homes. The students started by visiting the BeeHive Homes of Louisville, where they all participated in playing rounds of Bingo with the residents. “The council unanimously decided to choose the BeeHive as the first location of the day,” said Zachary Allen, a member of the Mayors Youth Council.
The Council then volunteered at Louisville Healthcare from 1:30 to 2:30, and went from there to Winston Medical Nursing Home.
At Winston Medical, the students went around to residents and talked to them about their days, their interests, and their hobbies. Some of the female residents even got their nails painted.
“We plan on making this an annual service project,” explained student and council member Macy Donald. This was the Youth Council’s second year to engage in a day of service, and they look forward to participating in similar service projects in the future.
