From press & staff reports
The Winston Medical Center Relay for Life Team is going all out this year to make their May 31 event just as special as last year.
Volunteers and organizers have been very busy raising money for The American Cancer Society Relay for Life to be held Friday, May 31 at Louisville High School. Some of the fundraisers that Winston Medical Center has participated in to raise money for this event include a bake sale with items from Ole Country Bakery, as well as selling T-shirts and having cookbooks published.
They also held a Disney Character Dining Day on May 4 at Lake Tiak O’Khata, which featured famous Disney characters such as Woody, Buzz, Snow White, Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, and others.
Other organizations have also contributed to fundraising for this important event. Fair Elementary is also selling T-shirts and cookbooks with the proceeds going to Relay for Life. Relay is also seeking more businesses, churches, civic and service clubs, families and individuals to join in the Relay for Life by sponsoring a team to walk in the Relay. Also, sponsoring a community event and fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society is a way to join as well.
Chairwoman Brandi Krajewski is proud of the fundraising accomplishments that have already been achieved. “The fundraising is awesome,” Krajewski said. “As of now, we are ahead $6,290.77.”
This year’s event, entitled “Cancer Doesn’t Take A Holiday”, will feature a host of entertainment for all to share in. “We are in the process of getting all the entertainment together,” Krajewski said. “We have had several local entertainers call us to be placed on the list to perform.”
During the Relay for Life event, a luminary service will be held to remember those who have died of cancer and to honor cancer survivors. Luminaries are $10 each and will be set out along the Relay track.
Krajewski explained how the teams will be asked to do a skit at the event, and that plans for the event are going well at this time. The goal of the Winston County Relay in addition to raising awareness is to raise $45,000. Churches, corporations and civic organizations are among those invited to create teams.
Teams that will be participating as of right now include: Winston Medical Center, The Way Community Church, Nanih Waiya School, Fair Elementary, Louisville Elementary, Eiland Middle School, Evergreen Baptist Church, Crystal Ridge Baptist Church, Louisville Fire Association, East Winston Fire Dept. and First Presbyterian Church.
Krajewski is thankful for all the support so far in reaching their goals. “Relay has kicked off this year with so much support,” Krajewski said. “Our community is strong and has a desire to help those in need.”
The Relay For Life of Winston County will have their opening ceremony at 6 p.m., with cancer survivors taking their victory lap at 7 p.m. Everyone’s support is needed to make this event a success. “We need the support of the community,” Krajewski said. “We need for anyone who wants to help join the fight against cancer to get active.”
