If one would want to blame the recent Winston loss on one player, then it should be Nathan Cothern!!
The junior running back from Tri County in Flora rushed for 310 yards and scored on touchdown runs on 70,15,43,44, and 5 yards respectively. But the Patriots also put on their best rushing performance of the year in earning 252 rushing yards but it wasn’t enough to pull out a victory over the 7-1 Rebels.
Cothern added the first 2 touchdowns of the night to put Tri County ahead 14-0 at the close of the opening quarter, but after the Patriots were stopped at the Tri County 30 yard line on a fourth down attempt on their first possession.
Taylor Moody then gave the Patriots a boost when he took in over from 1 yard out to start the second quarter. The 2 point conversion failed and the Rebels led 14-6. Cothern would then add another score on a 43 yard run, followed by the PAT to send it to 21-6.
Winston’s next possession ended on fake punt attempt and the Rebels took over at their own 44 yard line with 6:41 left before half.
Tri County wasted no time and sent their lead to 28-6 with 2:42 remaining before half that bought all first half scoring to an end.
The Patriots would then start the second half with a bit of luck after the Rebels fumbled a punt and Michael Miller recovered at the Tri County 39.
Winston would capitalize on the turnover and score on a Miles Johnson 1 yard run with 8:44 left in the third. The PAT failed but Winston had cut the lead to 28-12.
Tri County would then move it to the Patriot 28 yard line before being stopped on a 4th down attempt.
The Patriot then put together a scoring drive than ended when Logan Webb found Kyle Stewart open in the end zone for a 14 yard strike.
The try for two failed but the Rebel lead had been cut to 28-18 with 3:32 left in the third. But here come Cothern again as he took it down the sidelines 44 yard for the score, followed by the PAT to increase their lead to 35-18 as the 3rd quarter came to an end.
He would then add another score with 11:29 left in the game to build a safe lead to 42-18. After punts from both teams,
Winston would add the final points of the night when Bradley Stapleton took it over form 4 yards out for the score. Brody Burchfield added the PAT to end all scoring for the night with e 42-25 Tri County victory.
But although Cothern had a stellar performance, Taylor Moody from Winston had his best showing of the year as he rushed for 165 yards on 19 carries and 1 touchdown. He was followed in rushing by Bradley Stapleton with 57 yards and a score. Miles Johnson had the other Winston rushing score. Logan Webb passed for 46 yards on one touchdown pass to Kyle Stewart. Carter Lane Jones led the receivers with 18 yards.
The defensive charge was led by Patrick McGivney with 7 stops, followed by Tyler Miles with 6. Michael Miller was credited with a fumble recovery.
So as the Patriots gave their best offensive show of the year, they will try to carry it over as they travel to Yazoo City this week to take of district opponent, Manchester. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
