Heartbreak can crush you or make you stronger.
First year Winston Academy head baseball coach Cory Burns is counting
on his Patriots coming back stronger this week after suffering a pair
of last-inning losses to district foe Canton Academy last week.
In both games the Patriots had the league-leading Panthers down to
their last strike, before Canton was able to rally for the win.
“We just need to go out and play well this week and get the job
done,” Burns said of his team’s two league contests against Oak Hill
Academy. “We can do this. We proved we could play with the team that
is leading the division last week. Now we need to go and earn a
Canton leads the district at 6-0, while Oak Hill is 5-1 and Winston
is 3-3. A sweep would tie Oak Hill and Winston at 5-3 with a week to
go. The Patriots play Manchester twice the last week, while Oak Hill
takes on Canton.
WA was set to visit Oak Hill on Tuesday, before hosting the Raiders
at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The Patriots host Central Academy of Macon on
Friday at 5 p.m. in a non-league match-up.
In last Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to Canton Academy, the Patriots held a 2-1
lead going into the top of the seventh before the Panthers rallied in
their last at bat. Winston got runners on second and third in the
bottom of the inning but couldn’t come up with the game-tying hit.
Channing Wall pitched a strong game for the Patriots, going seven
innings and striking out 10 batters while allowing just four hits.
Logan Webb smacked a double to lead WA at the plate, while Brody
Birchfield, Braxton Wall, Kenny Wright, Channing Wall, and Tristan
Ables each had a single.
On Thursday the Pats held a 10-4 lead going into the bottom of the
seventh inning, only to have Canton score seven runs to take the win.
Braxton Wall pitched the first six innings of that game for WA,
allowing just two hits and two walks.
Taylor Moody had two doubles and a single for the Patriots, while
Braxton Wall homered and singled, Carter Lane Jones had three singles
and Peyton Allen a pair. Channing Wall and Ables also each had a
single for Winston.
