The Winston Jr. High Patriots finished their season with a perfect 7-0 record and captured the District 2 AA Jr. High Championship by defeating the Leake Rebels last Thursday night at Patriot Field. But the payback came the next night in Maden when the home standing Rebels put a quick end to the Winston celebration when they defeated the Patriots 21-0.
It only took one minute and thirty seconds for the revenge to start as Leake scored on their third play of the game on a 60 yard touchdown pass. The PAT put the Rebels up 7-0 early in the contest. Winston then got a break when Reed McCool recovered a Rebel fumble at the Leake 35 yard line.
Winston was denied first down yardage and turned it back over on downs. Immediately after the start of the second quarter, Leake would add another score with the PAT failing to go up 13-0 with 11:44 left in the half. The opportunities kept falling in the Patriot’s lap as Andrew Woodruff recovered another Leake fumble at the Winston 4 yard line with 5:25 remaining before halftime. The Patriots them put together their best drive of the night, moving it to the Leake 24 yard line before being stopped on downs to send both teams into halftime with the Rebels leading 13-0.
Winston started with possession in the second half but both teams went through a series of punt exchanges until 2:35 left in the third quarter. It was at this point that the Rebels added another score with the 2 point conversion pass successful, to send their lead to 21-0.
The Patriots then started at their own 39 yard line and punt another good drive together that stopped at the Leake 26 yard line. The Rebel defense tightened and the Patriots were denied the needed first down yardage. As both teams slugged it out for the remainder of the game without scoring, Leake would hand the Patriots their second district loss of the season and drop the Patriots to 1-6 on the year.
As the Winston offense faced a strong Leake defense, they manager to put up 102 yards in rushing and 60 in passing. Taylor Moody led the rushing field with 71 yards. He was followed by Miles Johnson with 27. Brody Burchfield led the passing with 33 yards and was followed by Logan Webb with 27. Reed McCool was the leading receiver with 33 yards.
The leading tacklers were Reed McCool, Patrick McGivney, and Dale Chancellor with 6 each. They were followed by Will Moody with 5.
The Patriots will be at home this week as they play new district opponent, Tri County from Flora. Winston head coach, Bo Milton served as the head coach at Tri County in 1997 and faced the Patriots in the State Championship game that year. With the Patriot’s victorious in that game, he would like to see a repeat victory with his current team, over his previous team.
Game time is 7:00 PM.
