Relay for Life countdown continues

From staff and press reports Relay For Life of Winston County will be here in 100 days. Why is that significant? Because the American Cancer Society, the official sponsor of birthdays, celebrates a huge milestone this year. On May 22, American Cancer Society will be 100 years old. 1913, 15 volunteers who came together and formed what we know as the American Cancer Society. It was volunteers who took up the fight 100 years ago, and it is volunteers who will finish the fight. All persons are invited to Join Relay For Life and help the volunteers and organizers make this cancer’s last century. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing community event that gives the community a chance to celebrate the lives of survivors who have battled cancer, honor the caregivers, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. The American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event for Winston County will be held Friday, May 31 at Louisville High School. The opening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m., with cancer survivors taking their victory lap at 7 p.m. A team captain’s meeting will be held Thursday, February 21 in the Winston Medical Cafeteria for teams to organize fundraisers and plan for the Relay for Life county event. Chairwoman Brandi Krajewski said the theme for the 2013 event is: “Cancer Doesn’t Take A Holiday”. The theme aims to focus the event’s mission with the idea that the fight against cancer never stops. Teams will decorate their campsites in a holiday theme. The goal of the Winston County Relay in addition to raising awareness is to raise $45,000. Churches, corporations and civic organizations are among those invited to create teams. Teams can register online at During the Relay for Life event, a luminary service will be held to remember those who have died of cancer and to honor cancer survivors. Luminaries are $10 each and will be set out along the Relay track.
