Several hundred residents laced up their running shoes and opened their purses and wallets for the Relay For Life Winston County event held April 22 at the Louisville Coliseum. This year’s theme was “Fighting For A Cure Under the Big Top!”, with teams decorating their campsites with a carnival theme.
The Winston County Relay for Life 2016 event was a great success, with six teams assisting in meeting the $35,000 goal the organization had established. The event also featured 19 sponsors including local businesses and individuals. All proceeds raised were to help in the fight against cancer.
The funds for Relay will help the American Cancer Society (ACS) in research, Prevention education, programs, advocacy, and to help those battling cancer. ACS funds have helped 21 Winston County residents directly.
“I cannot believe the wonderful turnout tonight at Relay!” Brandi Krawjewski, Relay for Life chairperson said. “We raised $10,000 in a short 5 hours! That will bring us over our $35,000 goal! Way to go Relay for Life team!”
The event featured the Survivor’s Lap, with cancer survivors taking the first lap around the track in honor of them. The Survivors Lap lets all cancer survivors at the event celebrate their victory over cancer. This year’s survivor on the Relay Committee was Allison Shanabrough.
The event concluded with the luminary service at 10 p.m. A touching and personal portion of the program, Relay For Life participants and donors remembered their loved ones lost to cancer by dedicating luminaria (paper bags containing votive candles) that were placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer.
Krajewski thanked this year’s Relay Committee for all of their service and hard work.

There is no entry fee to participate, but individuals or teams are asked to raise money before relay day.
Relay For Life has taken place in the Winston County for two decades with Krajewski at the helm for about the last 6 years.
