The Winston County sheriff’s office will host a handgun safety class
for Winston County residents July 27 starting at the Winston County Annex Building at 8 a.m.
The class will consist of about three hours of classroom discussion
at the Winston County Annex Building, along with range activity at the Winston/Choctaw Correctional Facility.
The class will focus on basic safety for handgun owners and their families, proper cleaning and storage of handguns, and Mississippi laws concerning possession of handguns. The shooting range will use a maximum of 70 rounds.
“To teach the basic knowledge and skills and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of guns in the home,”according to the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course Lesson Plans.
Class size is limited to 25 people. The cost of the class is $75 to cover NRA booklet, targets, refreshments, and other costs. The class will be taught by Jonathan Peeples, Jason Pugh and Neal Higgason. Peeples is a National High Scoring Individual Conservation Officer, National PPC National Championships and a NRA Distinguished in NRA PPC in both revolver and semiautomatic weapons.
Participants in the class will need to bring a notepad, pen, 70 rounds, ear plugs, shooting glasses or prescription glasses, proof of medical insurance and an unloaded handgun. The handgun must pass a safety inspection prior to use on the firing range.
All interested persons must preregister at the Winston County Sheriff’s office.
To preregister persons must bring a $75 check or cash, the make, model and caliber of the handgun, proof of medical insurance, fill out a form for emergency contact and a sign a release of liability form.
