The Distinguished Young Women of Winston Scholarship Program will be holding the 60th annual program at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Louisville High School.
Six contestants from around Winston County will compete for thousands of dollars in college scholarships and the chance to represent the county at local events and at the state contest and possibly at the national finals in Mobile, Ala. The DYW scholarship program is based on academic scholastics, leadership, physical fitness and talent.
At the program, contestants will perform an opening number and compete in a performing arts talent routine, a physical fitness routine and self expression. Contestants are also evaluated in based on academic scholastics and interview.
“It instills in girls to be responsible, to be involved, studious, healthy, and to just try to be a more well rounded young lady,” according to the Distinguished Young Women website.
Contestant number 1 is Charlessia Mays. Miss Mays is the daughter of Charles and Gwenita Mays. She is a junior at Louisville High School. For her talent, she will be Praise Dancing/Miming to “Better” by Jessica Reedy.
Contestant number 2 is Marla Katherine Hudson. Miss Hudson is the daughter of Cliff and Ann Hudson. Marla is a junior at Winston Academy. For her talent, she will be playing Midnight Fantasy by Melody Bober on the piano.
Contestant number 3 is Jillian Brianne Gregory. Miss Gregory is the daughter of Kevin and Nicole Gregory. She is a junior at Nanih Waiya Attendance Center. Jillian will perform sign language to How Great Thou Art by Carrie Underwood for her talent.
Contestant number 4 Keyasha Edwards. Miss Edwards is the daughter of Crystal Young and Monte Edwards. She is a junior at Louisville High School. For her talent, she will be performing a HipHop Dance to “Get Me Bodied” by Beyonce.
Contestant number 5 is Iris Keen. Miss Keen is the daughter of Brenda Keen and Odie Keen. She is a junior at Winston Academy. Iris will be playing Midnight Rhapsody by Melody Bober on the piano for her talent.
Contestant number 6 is Stephanie Rochelle Hayes. Miss Hayes is the daughter of MaeLean Hayes & Kevin Hayes. She is a junior at Louisville High School. For her talent, she will be performing a HipHop Dance to Problem by Ariana Grande.
Leading up to the event, the contestants have enjoyed several social events such as a slumber party held at Lake Tiak O Khata on February 12 for all 2017 DYW contestants and their little sisters.
