Wildcats ranked among state’s best football teams

M.C. Miller new exactly what the talk would be the minute his Louisville High School Wildcats were moved down to Class 3A by the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

“Everybody expects us to win it,” Miller said. “The target will be on our backs and there will be a lot of high expectations.”

Those expectations continued for the 2013 Wildcats this week as the Jackson Clarion-Ledger put them in the No. 10 spot in its Super 10 rankings that rate all of the high school football teams in Mississippi regardless of class.

There is a familiar name to Louisville fans connected to the No. 1 team in the Super 10 rankings, as Brandon High School is coached by former LHS head coach and quarterback Brad Peterson.

Olive Branch is ranked No. 2, followed by South Panola, Oak Grove and Petal. Meridian is sixth and Madison Central seventh, giving the top seven spots in the rankings to Class 6A schools. Class 5A West Point is No. 8, followed by 5A Picayune and 3A Louisville.

The Wildcats of LHS are the top team in Class 3A, with defending 3A champ Hazlehurst coming in at No. 2. Rounding out the top five teams in 3A are Cleveland Eastside, Philadelphia and Water Valley. LHS hosts Philadelphia on Sept. 13.

The only other area team in any of the Clarion-Ledger football rankings is Noxubee County, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

Noxapater adds game to 2013 schedule

Noxapater head football coach Justin Hunter got tired of looking at those two open dates on his schedule, so when he saw an opportunity to fill one of them he jumped on it. The Tigers will visit Vardaman this Friday night at 7 and the Rams will return the favor in 2014.

“It kind of came open late,” Hunter said of Vardaman’s vacancy. “They had scheduled Tupelo Christian, but they aren’t playing football this year so I gave them a call and we worked it out.”

He said the game could be a big bonus for his Tigers, who are trying to get on the winning track following a 0-2 start.

Initially Hunter had liked the idea of an open date before Noxapater hosts league foe French Camp Academy on Sept. 13, but now thinks the game can help his team boost it’s confidence.

“We need to go up there and play well,” Hunter. “If we can go up there and get a win it might be just what we need before playing French Camp. It could get us feeling good about ourselves.”

Vardaman is 0-2 on the season, including a 53-6 season-opening loss to East Webster.
