After the Winston Patriots were victorious in their own Homecoming game last week, they fell prey to the Starkville Volunteers at their Homecoming by at score of 14-0.
Both teams slugged it out during the first quarter by punting back and forth to each other until 1:59 left on the opening quarter clock. It was then that Winston suffered a fumble turnover at their own 8 yard line that set up the first Starkville score.
After the failed extra point attempt, the Vols had gone ahead 6-0 with 39 seconds left in the quarter. Winston then moved the ball to the Volunteer 33 yard line before being stopped on a 4th down attempt. Both teams then slugged it out with each drive ending in punts until halftime came with the score still showing the 6-0 Starkville lead. The third quarter showed only had 1 long possession from each team with no points being added.
But the Winston drive put hope in the minds of the Patriots as they started at the own 20 and were stopped on a 4th down attempt at the Starkville 8 yard line with 5:07 left . Shortly after the start of the final quarter of play, the Patriots blocked a Volunteer field goal try and took over at their own 20 yard line.
After moving the ball to midfield, the Patriots then turned it back over on a fumble at midfield.
The Volunteers would then take advantage of the turnover and add the final points of the night, with the 2 point conversion to follow and bring the final score to 14-0.
Winston could not put together a scoring drive to follow and the clocked ticked down end the game with the Patriots falling to 1-5 on the year. The Patriots saw Reed McCool lead the defensive attack with 10 tackles, He was followed by Patrick McGivney with 9, and Kyle Stewart and Taylor Moody with 8 each.
The offensive side had Taylor Moody as the leading rusher with 50 yards on 10 carries. He was followed by Miles Johnson with 31 yard on 7 carries. Logan Webb completed 8 of 13 passes for 86 yards. His primary receivers were Brody Burchfield and D.K. Boydstun with 29 yards each, and Carter Lane Jones with 28 yards. Tyler Miles had a good night of punting with a 38 yard average on 4 punts.
Winston’s next 4 and final opponents on the schedule are all district games and each one is a must in order to face the playoff scene.
Winston will travel to Leake in Maden this Friday night, where the “Real Season” now begins. Game time is 7 PM.
