Teen Art Program a success at Library

From press reports

The Winston County Library held their monthly Teen Program on Tuesday, July 24 and all the participants channeled their artistic talents for the event.

Mother and daughter Chasidy and Abby Hathorn, of Louisville, guided the teens in an artistic program designed to enhance the new Splash Teen Room. Working in pairs, the teenagers painted ceiling tiles, which will be placed in the Splash Teen Room Ceiling. They were told to paint whatever they wanted and the results are amazing -everything from a patriotic flag, to manga characters, to abstract neon paint splashes.

The library Teen Council meets the second Tuesday of every month from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m., and Teen Programming is held on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.. Any teenager, ages 13 – 18, is invited to participate in the programming each month. Recent programs have included Cyberbullying, Facebook/Social Media Pros and Cons, Water War, Self-Defense, How to Write/Draw A Graphic Novel, Scavenger Hunt and the most recent program – the Art Program.

Programs this fall will focus on Music, Winston County History, Movie Date, Tutoring (Term Papers, English, Math), Wii Gaming Day and Public Speaking. If you are interested in attending the Teen Programs, just call the library at 773-3212 to sign up. If you are interested in joining the Splash Teen Council come by the library and pick up an application.

The library receives new young adult books monthly and the Teen Council can Voice their choices in what items are purchased for the Teen Room. The Splash room is colorful, comfortable and fun to be in. Two free internet-access computers are available (for teens only), as are games, music cds, movies, magazines and comfortable FatBoy bean chairs.

The library also offers teens an opportunity to volunteer for community service hours for a college resume.

Beth Edwards, librarian, will present students with a letter qualifying the student’s volunteer hours. Contact the library at 773-3212 for more information and stop by and check out the Splash Room for yourself.
