Noxapater’s Ty Duran and Ryan Whitfield were the only Tigers to advance to the 1A North Half powerlifting meet held last week at Calhoun City. Both of them will now be competing in the Class 1A meet next month in Jackson.
Duran won the 114-pound weight class and was unopposed. Duran finished with a total of 585 pounds with 175 pounds in squat, 135 pounds in bench and 275 in deadlift.
Last year, Duran finished third in his weight class in Class 1A and coach John Davis thinks he has a good chance this year.
“He should have a pretty good shot at state this year,” Davis said. “He finished third last year and one of the guys that finished ahead of him was a senior and one was an eighth grader but he may have moved up in weight class. He’s worked really hard in the weight room.”
Also advancing for Noxapater is Ryan Whitfield in the 242-pound weight class. Whitfield finished second with a 1,000-pound total. He had 335 pounds in the squat, 250 pounds on the bench and 415 pounds on the deadlift.
The MHSAA state championships will be held on Good Friday, April 14 at the Mississippi Coliseum.
