Upward basketball registration underway for children k through 6th

By Wendell Womack

The Louisville Upward program registration is in full swing during the month of October.

Children in grades K to 6th are invited to participate in this Christian sports program for children.

Basketball and cheerleading will again be offered as Louisville is starting the 9th year for this program. The K5 and 2nd grade children will practice and play their games at First United Methodist Church, while the 3rd to 6th grade kids will practice and play games at First Baptist Church.

The Upward substitution system is designed so that players of all talent levels will get equal playing time in each game. The motto of Upward is “Every Child Is A Winner”, and no pressure is put upon the players in game situations.

Devotions are presented to the children at each practice on a level that the children can understand.

That Saturday morning games then feature a half-times devotion for the fans and spectators present.

Each child will be required to attend an evaluation at a designated time for their age group, where they will be measured for their uniform and then go through a 6 step basketball evaluation. The scores from each child at the evaluation will then be put into a computer, where the teams are electronically selected.

The evaluation dates are November 4 and 6 between 6 PM and 7:30 PM at the First Baptist Church gym ad the First United Methodist gym.

If parents have children in both age groups, they can take their children to either church evaluation, as all children go through the same procedures.

Each child must be evaluated in order to be placed on a team. Practices will start the week of December 16 and each team will practice only 1 hour each week for 6 weeks.

When the games begin January 25, all practices will stop. Deadline to register is November 5.

Registration forms have been placed in all the Winston County Schools, and are also available in the offices of First Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church. Children outside of Winston County are also invited to participate.
