The Winton Patriots gave the Manchester Mavericks a dose of the same medicine they have received this year— a shutout!!
Although the game lasted a full 4 quarters, it took only a quarter and a half for the Patriots to get all their points before easily defeating the home standing Mavericks, 35-0.
The Patriots scored of their first 3 possessions that started when Michael Miller carried it in from 6 yards out with 7:15 left in the opening quarter.
Brody Burchfield assed his first of 5 PAT kicks to give Winston a 7-0 lead. Then before the start of the 2nd quarter, Taylor Moody took in over from 5 yards out with Burchfield’s kick to follow to increase the Patriot lead to 14-0.
Moody then added his second score of the nigh after Manchester punt was gathered in at the Winston 45 yard line, and he raced 55 yards for the score. Burchfield then sent the Winston lead to 21-0 with 11:01 left in the second quarter of play.
Manchester then suffered a lost fumble in which Tyler miles recovered to put the Patriots in good field position at the Maverick32 yard line with 10:50 left in the half. Winston then moved it to the Manchester 25 yard line and Burchfield attempted his first field goal of the year in which was wide left. The following Manchester possession ended in another punt and the Patriots put another scoring drive together that saw Taylor Moody again score for the Patriots. This time, he had a second effort surge that carried him over 9 yards out with the PAT to increase the Winston lead to 28-0 with 5:34 left before halftime.
Manchester then continued to face strong Patriot defensive charge, and turned in over on the following kickoff with a fumble. Patrick McGivney then scooped up the loose ball and went untouched into the end zone for 22 yards for the final touchdown of the night. Burchfield finished 100% for the night with his fifth PAT to end all scoring with the 35-0 Patriot lead.
Although no scoring was added by either team in the second half, it was a chance for the bench to clear and everyone see playing action. The Winston defense saw Will Moody lead the tackle list with 7 tackles, followed by Tyler Miles with 5 tackles and recovered fumble. Patrick McGivney recovered a fumble that was returned for a score.
The offense saw another great performance by Taylor Moody who rushed for 136 yards on 12 carries and two rushing touchdowns. He also returned a punt 55 yards for a score. He was followed by Hunter McElory with 23 yards and Bradley Stapleton with 19 yards. Michael Miller finished with a rushing touchdown and Brody Burchfield booted 5 PAT kick.
A total of 13 people carried the ball during the game. Logan Webb passed the 67 yards with Burchfield being on the receiving end of all 67 yards.
So as the Patriots bring their final game of the year back to the Patriot Field this week against district opponent Canton, a final game victory would bring a good end to an rather disappointing season record.
The high-powered opponents of the Patriots this season made victories hard to come by, so the recent taste of victory, should leave the desire for one more win, as the season comes to an end.
The senior players and cheerleaders will be recognized at this final game so as good crowd and victory, would be a good way to end their season and career for these students.
Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
